I was wondering if a veteran member/builder or two might have some time to talk to me on the phone to clarify the rules and build options for a couple of mowers we are going to begin building soon.
You can email me at john.rinsma@gmail.com with your phone number and a good time to call.
I am going to put two supermod chassis together. One will have a GX390cc horizontal engine for the junior class and the other a 18hp Vtwin Vanguard for the supermod class. Basic rules state that all tractors must have been a factory built lawn cutting tractor, so does that mean the horz. shaft GX390 can not be used because it was never used in a factory-built mower? Similarly, the 18hp Vtwin Vanguard was probably only used as a horz. shaft in only a very few tractors like Cub Cadets that are too heavy for racing.
Anyhow, that's the kind of clarification we're looking for. I'm hoping that as long as the chassis meets supermod specs, and the engine size meets the criteria, we can pretty much slap any old tractor hood on and race.
Thanks for your help! JR 705-696-1658

In supermod you can change the orintation of the crankshaft. The gx390 was used in factory built mowers so your good to go.

If you read the build rules for junior you will see that comment to be wrong no horizontal shafts allowed. The only classes we allow horizontal shafts are in super modified and open tractor. And to further clarify that even if you were to come to us with a brand new mower that came with a horizontal shaft in it it would not be allowed to use only in the super mod and open . I hope this clarifies this issue.

Thanks for the replies. Another member had alerted me to the fact that the rules state the engine must conform to stock mod or modified tractors which run vert shafts only. I was trying to avoid having to use a RAGB or transmission, but I'll have to work one in somewhere for the junior build.

Hi I too have been looking at that Vanguard 18hp. The only one I can find that has a vertical shaft and electric start is for a generator not a lawn tractor. Oh well the search continues.
