Anyone looking for bead locks? Anyone ever made their own?
I ordered a DWT 8x8 bead lock rim to see how they were made and am converting some 8x7 trailer style rims into bead locks. As far as I can tell, there are two drawbacks from the DWT rims: cost & metric bolt pattern. Even if you lay down the cash for the wheel assembly, you still need to rework your hubs in order to bolt them on.
My rims will have the standard 4 on 4" bolt pattern, the exact same working width as the DWT rim and will utilize a DWT lock ring. The welded rim bolting flange will be a CNC water jet cut piece of steel so that it fits the rim 100% true and will have the correct bolt pattern.
I part the rim on my lathe to keep it true and then use a donor rim flange to increase the overall width to 8" from 7." I'm sure I could source some 8x8 rims (golf cart?) as well to avoid having to widen them, but for now I am experimenting and using what I have on hand.
If there is any interest in this, I am willing to consider a small production run or can convert your existing rims for you.
